Closure to a Horrific Incident

Back in July my dear husband was one of the first few officers inside Theatre 9 after the dreadful shooting during the Batman premiere.  He rescued many people and had others die in his arms.  He and his fellow officers witnessed something that most people will never see.

I wrote about this a week after it happened here.

As the months have passed, I have been pretty impressed with the State of Colorado.  They truly have supported the victims and their families in some pretty amazing ways.  Nothing will ever erase what happened but I think they have felt supported.

Batman himself... I mean, Christian Bale, came out to show his support.  Many heard of him coming out to visit the victims at the hospital.  He did this quietly and people only found out he came after the fact (or maybe during) but it was not a highly publicized event that he initiated.  What many don't know is he came to thank Aurora PD as well.  Caleb got to meet him that day and let's just say he became a true super hero to a lot of people that day.

Then last week, the first responders were honored for a job well done with a ceremony that brought closure for them.  After all of the pain, sleepless nights and nightmares (when they do sleep), they were honored for all they did.   Caleb was honored with 2 medals, and he now holds 3 of the highest awards in the department.   As a wife you see the behind the scenes, you see the true feelings behind the brave face, you see the aftermath.  It's nice to know that people recognize this and all they did.

forgive the picture quality here

His job is hard.  At times it's really hard on him, and hard on the family, but it's times like these when you realize it's all worth it.  He is making a difference in way most people would never be able to.  I will persevere through the hard times because God has called our family into this life.

  1. Your husband is a true hero. I was at Virginia Tech on April 16, so I know what that feels like. And I love that Christian Bale supported everyone. He's a class act (doesn't hurt that I'm watching Batman Begins right now!).

  2. I really love that you wrote about this, Jami. Both to show everyone what a strong family you are, and to show how our community came together! I've felt the need to defend our city multiple times since the shooting, when friends, and even family members have said careless, thoughtless things about it -- even about our state! But the sad truth is that we live in a broken world, and that brokenness isn't localized to one state or city.

Congrats to you, and your hubby, on his medals! (Hey, since Tim used to be in the Army, and still works a dangerous job, I say those medals are half yours. Hehe.) You must be so very proud of him.

  3. Wow!! At first I couldn't tell that was Christian Bale in the picture until you said it. No wonder people didn't realize he was there...
Anyway, congratulations to your husband! You must be so proud of your husband and the wonderful job he is doing to keep the community safe! So glad he was there to help those that needed help. Your husband is a hero!

  4. I know the feelings of how hard it can be... my husband is a Sheriff and boy can it be tough sometimes. He hasn't had any calls like the one your husband had but I know he probably will have something similar someday and I rue the day when it does. But please tell your husband thank you for what he does and thank you to you for being a wife to a cop because I know how very difficult it is every day! I don't go one day without worrying that something is going to happen to my husband when he's out there patrolling. But I'll tell you on thing, I am proud every day too to say that my husband risks his life every day to help others. it makes you really appreciate the small things!
